Aechmea fosteriana fue recolectada por primera vez por Mulford y Racine Foster durante su viaje de 1939 a Brazil (detallado en su libro Brazil - Orchid of the Tropics). Es una planta tubular con hojas anchas en forma de tira que miden hasta 2 pies de largo. La superficie de la hoja tiene bandas cruzadas irregulares, oscuras, generalmente incompletas con un color de fondo verde mate. La inflorescencia está compuesta por ramas extendidas. Aechmea fosteriana es excelente montada en superficies de madera o árboles y puede soportar el sol directo cuando se aclimata. Como puede ver en la foto, esta especie puede asumir muchas variaciones de color según la iluminación y otros factores ambientales. Puede alcanzar hasta 20'' de alto. El comprador recibe un esqueje (de tamaño mediano a grande).
